MALADAPTIVE
has just released their self-entitled first demo CD with four songs
mixed by JOEY VERA (ANTHRAX, FATES WARNING, ARMORED SAINT). This
explosive disc brings the band’s powerful and aggressive way of
composing and executing an extreme package of intrincate thrash guitar
riffs, strong and intense drums and bass playing, and a variation of
harsh and clean vocals delivered by Frederic LECLERCQ. The group is
better described by their own mixer: “Great musicianship, great
melodies and interesting guitar riffs make for a cool group to watch
out for. They have a cool balance of a traditional and modern sound.”
Completing his comments on MALADAPTIVE, JOEY VERA also explains his
objectives when mixing “Maladaptive”, “Burn The Witches”, “Monster” and
“Traitor” (the four songs of the demo): “The tracks I mixed were sent
to me in a very intuitive way so that the song really jumped out at
you. I just tried to push them further in your face.” And we must say
he was very successful doing that.
Formed by the above-mentioned Frederic LECLERCQ (vocals / guitars),
plus Pierre-Emmanuel PELISSON (bass), and Max PILO (drums), the French
trio marks a huge disruption in its members history. Formely musicians
of the acclaimed euro speed metal band HEAVENLY, they had experiences
of recording with Kai Hansen (guest musician on Heavenly’s “Coming From
The Sky”), touring with acts such as Stratovarius, Edguy and Symphony
X, and working with renowned producers and mixers as Tommy Hansen
(Pretty Maids, Helloween, etc.) and Sascha Paeth (Kamelot, Brainstorm,
etc.).
Although proud of their past, they looked for a new sound to fit in
their real tastes and roots. PELISSON clarifies the radical change:
“Fred never really liked this style (euro speed / melodic metal) in the
first place (...) and while I liked this style, I grew tired of it, and
came back to my original love (heavy metal, thrash metal) and
discovered more death and black metal”.
MALADAPTIVE’s music reached the ears of drummer AQUILES PRIESTER
Priester (ANGRA, HANGAR) - a.k.a. “Octopus”, a die hard fan of thrash
and death metal - whom stated: “Talent and innovation. There is no
better combination for a new band to go straight to the top. And that's
exactly what I realized while listening to Maladaptive. The
compositions vary extremely fast moments, some more cadenced, and
always very technical and very well worked in your face guitars with
colours that remind us the best of the 80's Thrash Metal. However, if
there's some nostalgia in those comments, it ends up right here, as
this band brings a lot of fresh stuff in the arrangements and vocal
melodies. For certain this mix has everything to be successful as
nowadays there are few dauntless bands investing and / or showing
something new, just like Maladaptive does. Impressive!”
After many tries, the band found a proper session guitarist in
Nicklaus. this talented and passionate multi-instrumentist musician was
the missing link that the band was searching for.
In May 2005, Maladaptive locked themselves up in studio to record a
second demo, eventually more powerful and agressive than the previous
one. Although a release date is undefined for the moment, some excerpts
might be on the official website soon.

- Started playing...: I started learning piano by the age of...10?.
then guitar, when I was 14. (the first song I ever played was the
"Running Free" bass line...and yeah, the "I Wanna Be Somebody" bass
line. then the first real guitar song was "Phantom of the Opera")
- Early influences: IRON MAIDEN, MÖTLEY CRÜE, ALICE COOPER, MORBID
ANGEL, METALLICA, ANTHRAX, JUDAS PRIEST, KREATOR, ANNIHILATOR,
SCORPIONS, DEF LEPPARD, SLAYER, KISS,...
- Bands that stand up nowadays: same shits as mentioned before, but I
can add ALAN HOLDSWORTH, PERRY BLAKE... dunno... I'm listening to so
many things. I'd like to mention my friends from CARNIVAL IN
COAL,because their music is great... mmm...well, yeah, NEVERMORE and
SYMPHONY X both rule!
- Favorite thing in music: Melody is the most important thing for me. I
rather prefer Adrian Smith or Uli Jon Roth than Vinnie Vincent :) Im
also pretty sensitive about intensity and truth in the music. I like
melancholic, dark atmospheres... but Poison works for me too...
- Top 5 Metal albums: mmmm...
IRON MAIDEN "Somewhere in Time"
ALICE COOPER "Welcome to my Nightmare"
MORBID ANGEL "Blessed are the Sick"
SCORPIONS "In Trance"
MÖTLEY CRÜE "Shout at the Devil"
Damned, only 5... really tough (everybody says "blablabla its tough...but it REALLY is)
- Maladaptive is...: the expression of my inner feelings, the result of
all my experiences as a musician and a heavy metal fan. this is the
music I always wanted to play. Im giving 100% of my time, health and
sweat to this band.
- Favorite Maladaptive song: "Burn the Witches" means a lot to me, for
this was the first song I composed for Maladaptive (back in 2002).
Then, that was the first song I chose when I wanted to check if I was
able to sing for the band. I really love the chorus... and the entire
mid part takes me to a higher place when Im listening to it AND/OR
playing it!
Then, I love the long solo part in Maladaptive, especially the "jazzy"
part. This a side of our music I appreciate a lot. You never really
know what's next: isit going to be a technical atmospheric part? or
just "in your face"?
we always try to catch people's attention on the chorus and verses, cos
I like the "sing along" idea. Although I may (or may not) scream about
death or sing about a dead friend or whisper words of pure depression,
I want kids to be able to sing with me, to identify themselves with the
lyrics..Whether you're dark or happy, whether you're serious or funny,
whether you're technic or feelings, there will always be a place for
you in our music. Cause we are Maladaptive: we do not accept rules, we
do not follow a straight line...our music mirrors our feelings....
- Name: Pierre-Emmanuel Pélisson
- Nickname: PE
- Former band(s) and project(s):
lots of local bands/project with friends (which amounted to not much)
NORTHWIND (melodic metal) 2000;
HEAVENLY (euro speed metal) 2000-2004;
EGOINE (hard rock) 2003-;
SUXEED (Maladaptive metal) 2004;
- Instrument: Bass, backing vocals
- Equipment:
Spector NS2 4 strings
Spector Legend5 5 strings
Line 6 Bass Pod
- Started playing...: I started playing classical guitar at around 8,
didn't really work much on that. Started playing electric guitar at
around 14, and switched to bass in 2000.
- Early influences: Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Metallica, Megadeth,
Anthrax, Helloween, Malmsteen, Van Halen, Fear Factory, Kreator
- Bands that stand up nowadays: Nevermore, Symphony X, Death, Morbid Angel, Cynic, Pestilence, Motley Crue...
- Favorite thing in music: I love power, aggression, and melody.
Technicality is always a plus when it's cleverly done. But the best
things can be very simple cool (and it's maybe even harder to achieve).
Creating an special atmosphere and giving an identity (in whatever form
it might come) is very important too.
- Top 5 Metal albums: tough one... Right now I'd say
IRON MAIDEN "Seventh son of a seventh son"
QUEENSRYCHE "Operation Mindcrime"
NEVERMORE "Dead heart in a dead world"
DEATH "Symbolic"
MEGADETH "Rust in Peace"
- Maladaptive is... : The perfect band for me to play in, it's
everything I want to play. We put everything I like in metal in
Maladaptive (power, aggression and melody as I said earlier). I feel we
can do pretty much whatever we like, because all we love in metal has
its place in Maladaptive. I also love it when we have an idea that we
think we won't be able to achieve, and in the end we manage to pull it
off anyway.
- Favorite Maladaptive song: "Burn the witches" pretty much sums up
what Maladaptive is all about. It's got great heavy riffs, a very
melodic chorus, a dark and slow middle part, great solos, and a fast
and aggressive part towards the end.
I love "Maladaptive" as well. I love the way the vocals and the music
work well with the lyrics. The beginning is fast and relentless. I love
the intricate riffs after the second chorus, and the different moods in
the solos, with twisted breaks between them leading to the crazy fast
end.

Drums:
For practicing i use a ROCKSTAR kit with silent pins and triggers
plugged into a DDRUM module. The cymbals are also from DDRUM... this
kit is good to practice my tempo and my drum parts but the feelings are
totally different so I need my real drumkit!!!
On stage and studio I use a custom made TAMA's "STARCLASSIC PERFORMER"
called the "BLACK WIDOW"!!! It's a transparent black kit with black
tainted hardware.
The kit is build around :
Two 22x18 bass drums
Four toms, 8x8; 9x10; 12x14; 14x16
A starclassic maple snare ;4x14 sherry black color with gold platted hardware
IRON COBRA power glide pedals
Cymbals:
PAISTE signature serie. Sizes and models could change but most of the
times i use, 1 hi-hat, 3or4 crashs,1 china, 2 bells, 2 splashs and THE
ride, a wonderfull dry dark ride 20"
Hardware:
TAMA
EASTON AHEAD sticks
EVANS heads
- Started playing...: Because my father was a drummer I always thought
drums were COOOOL !!! So I started to play (around 1993), old rock
standards with him (bands like Santana, Iron Butterfly, Ten Years
after...) but also soul music, blues and rythm and blues...
Then I discovered hard rock and so metal with IRON MAIDEN, GUN'S AND
ROSES, METALLICA, MEGADETH... that was the begining of everything for
me!!!
I took some lessons during 3 or 4 months but I really learned by myself...
- Early influences: OTIS REDDING, SANTANA, THE DOORS, IRON MAIDEN,
GUN'S AND ROSES, MEGADETH, HELLOWEEN, MANOWAR, EUROPE and a lot of
european speed metal bands... well I know nobody's perfect!!!:-)
- Bands that stand up nowadays: KISS, ALICE COOPER, NEVERMORE, PANTERA,
MÖTLEY CRÜE, ANNIHILATOR... and a lot of other stuff, depends on my
mood!!!
- Favorite thing in music: Feelings are sooo important to me... just by
takin' care about the feelings you can touch something just impossible
to describe, I know it doesn't help at all but you must live it to
understand what it means !!! Sorry...
- Top 5 Metal albums:
GUN'S AND ROSES "Appetite for destruction"
ANNIHILATOR "Set the world on fire"
NEVERMORE "Dead heart in a dead world"
VINCE NEIL "Exposed"
PANTERA "Cowboys from hell"
This is my top 5 today... We'll see tomorrow!!
- Maladaptive is...: WAOW... MALADAPTIVE is what i am today with all my
mistakes, my fears, my fantasiess... This band is more than just a part
of me!!!
- Favorite Maladaptive song: I don't have a favorite song cause they
are all a part of this band, a part of each members ...and my god after
what Fred said i have nothing more to write!!!
But because I'm a nice guy i would say that right now i'm more into the song MALADAPTIVE...
